The government ordered thousands of people to stay at home as authorities want to stop the new COVID-19 outbreak in northern China. The latest outbreak came with the Beijing Winter Olympics more than a hundred days away.
Authorities advised Beijing residents to avoid leaving the city. However, regular transport services going out of the city continued to operate. According to sports news reports, there were 39 new cases of the Delta-variant on Monday. There are now more than a hundred cases in recent weeks.
Although the number is low compared to other countries, China implemented a zero-case plan to stop the current outbreak in time for the Winter Olympics.
COVID-19 Outbreak as Beijing Winter Olympics Nears
According to gambling reviews and news sources, authorities locked down several housing compounds in Beijing. Also, organizers postponed a marathon with around 30,000 were expected to participate.
The government advised people to avoid unnecessary travels outside Beijing and large gatherings. People entering the capital from places with known COVID-19 cases need to show a negative test.
In Wuhan, organizers canceled a marathon last Sunday. They estimated that around 30,000 runners were joining the race. Wuhan was the city where the coronavirus was first identified in 2019.
According to sports wagering sources, health officials warned that the number of cases may increase as they ramp up testing to stop the outbreak. They said that the cause of the latest outbreak was a group of local tourists that traveled across the country.
As a result, the government suspended inter-provincial tours in five regions where there are coronavirus cases, including the capital. However, Northern China has most of the cases. Health officials are conducting mass testing in eleven provinces.
Some cities suspended taxi and bus services. Also, they closed tourist sites to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
